Beaded natural white scarf for a bride

Beaded Lace Scarf for Bride I thought that at the end of November everybody is already thinking about Christmas and therefore I was surprised when I received a scarf order. And what an order it was! A beaded scarf for a bride. I had used beads before but only in small projects like ring bearer pillows and hair flowers, I knew that the methods I was using for these two things were too time consuming for a large project. So I dived into YouTube and found a suitable method for a large project (just type “dental floss beads lace” into YouTube if you are curious) where I wouldn’t have to chase beads around and at the same time the end result would still look good. I just substituted the dental floss with a slender needle.

I used the same natural white 100% wool yarn that is so soft that people have hard time believing that it is actually 100% wool and not something else such as merino. The yarn also holds form beautifully after blocking and is very warm. The beads are clear with silvery insides and they shimmer in the light but do not dominate over the shawl, just compliment it elegantly.

The scarf itself has a lily of the valley pattern and is triangular. But I will only show parts of it today and keep the whole scarf a secret. Hopefully I will be able to someday show the scarf where it belongs – on the shoulders of a beautiful bride

I just love the way the beads are in the nupps and bring a slight elegant shimmer to the shawl. Don’t you?

Spring is coming to Artanis Wedding Lace

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m so happy that spring is finally coming!

February was as usual for our family filled with different illnesses, all three kids had their share and so did I. Even my husband, who is usually very healthy did not escape this time. March has been a time to catch up on all the things that needed to be done in February. Luckily I have managed to find some time for knitting but I have not yet gotten to taking pictures (at the very top of my to do list) so I have only a few to show you.

As I said – spring is coming and I’m knitting a beautiful light blue scarf with flower pattern. Why light blue? Because my two favorite flowers are blue – cornflower and anemone hepatica.

Another flower shawl is this lily of the valley shawl that my friend has cherished for many years. She wore it daily and now it has become a little tired and has several holes. She really likes the shawl and so she brought it to me so I could see if I’m able to mend it. I really hope I have time for this before the end of March!

Resque project

And finally I want to share my joy. I recently got two sets of KnitPro blocking wires and they are so good to work with 🙂 Here is a picture of the blocking of four ring bearer pillows, before the wires I used pins and my fingertips were so sore afterwards.

Two Lily of the Valley Lace Ring Bearer Pillows

lily of the valley pattern knitted lace ring bearer pillow with blue beads by Artanis Wedding LaceI just finished editing the pictures of two lily of the valley lace ring bearer pillows. They have been waiting for a sunny day for a while now and luckily yesterday was sunny 🙂

Both of them have the same lily of the valley pattern on them and blue glass beads in the nupps. The pillows are knitted from soft Natural white wool and have different colour pillows in them. The size of the pillows is 12x12cm (4,7×4,7 in), 20x20cm with lace (7,9×7,9 in).

Wedding Shawl – Lily of the Valley

Wedding Shawl - Lily of the Valley1.1 - Artanis Wedding Lace

This is my second shawl with nupps. And I picked a pattern where there were a lot of them so that the finished shawl has 1188 nupps in it! And, since I used smaller needles than traditional it is smaller and less lacy than traditional Haapsalu Shawls, but is therefore a suitable wedding shawl for colder climates (here in Estonia summer nights can be quite chilly) or for a winter wedding. The size is also a matter of preference and for a smaller bride (like me – 165cm; 5’5”) it is quite suitable.

The pattern is one of the many Lily of the Valley patterns used in Haapsalu shawls and scarves. It is called the Turned Lily of the Valley Pattern because the flowers face different directions in alternating rows.

I loved knitting this pattern and I will definitely use it again and again (and already have, a bit bigger shawl is also ready). The pattern was very logical and I didn’t have to look at the chart all the time. The funny thing about knitted lace is that it’s true beauty emerges after blocking. I remember knitting this wedding shawl and thinking that it was a beautiful shawl, but when I had blocked it, I was so awed that for the longest time I just looked at the shawl and did not dare to touch it (as if my touch would break it).

I was so happy when I was at the photographers that I didn’t notice that the shawl would have looked even nicer if it had been on the other way around (or if I would have sat with the other side facing Krista). But, I was just so incredibly happy being there and I can’t wait for the next time!

Material: 100% soft wool, cobweb weight (1400 m in 100 g; 1531 yards in 100g)
Color: Natural white
Size: approximately 50x140cm (19,7×55,1 in)
Needles: 2,5mm (US1) for center and 3,5mm (US4) for lace edge.
Because of the size it can’ t be said that it is a traditional Haapsalu Shawl but I used traditional techniques and traditional number of stitches and rows.

What is so nice about the wedding shawl is that after the wedding you don’t have to leave it into the cupboard to gather dust. Instead, you can use it on other occasions or wrap it around yourself on chilly evenings, bringing back memories of your wedding.
